Q. What does it feel like to be hypnotised?
A. The actual experience of being hypnotised is very difficult to describe, neither asleep nor awake. All hypnotic states are characterised by a tremendously pleasant state of relaxation, an altered state of consciousness into which individuals allow themselves to enter so that desired, beneficial suggestions may be given directly to the unconscious mind. Thus, hypnosis is a natural, effective way of making contact with the inner (unconscious) self, a source of many of our problems as well as a tremendous reservoir of unrecognised potential strength and knowledge, i.e the forgotten assets. It is a unique experience for everybody. This is the wonderful thing about hypnosis, because we are all unique individuals, you experience what is appropriate for you, rather than trying to adapt to a "one size fits all" type of therapy. Some people experience different visual sensations, while others experience their hearing becomes hyper-sensitive. Some people slump deeply in the chair while others remain bolt upright. There are no rules about how you should behave or what pleasant sensations you will experience, just as no two people are exactly the same.
Q. What If I can't reach a deep level of trance?A. The good news is that deep trance is not needed to treat the vast majority of conditions. Some people do not go any deeper than closing their eyes and feeling comfortable, yet still achieve the same therapeutic results as those who are capable of the deepest (somnambulistic) levels of trance. Just a willingness to follow some simple instructions is all that is required.
Q. Will I lose control?A. No, not at all. You are very much in control, in fact, if you felt apprehensive then you could open your eyes at anytime. You do not lose consciousness, its more of a case that your conscious part of your mind "takes a back seat" so to speak, so your unconscious mind can receive beneficial suggestions and sow the seeds of new behaviour.
Q. Will I remember anything?A. Almost all people remember everything although a small proportion experience amnesia. The therapy will be just as profound whatever you remember.
Q. I have heard of people who have been damaged by stage hypnosis, am I in danger?A. No, you are in no danger whatsoever. The analogy that can be drawn between a stage hypnotist and a fully qualified and ethical hypnotherapist, is that of the former being akin to a joy rider who has scant regard for the safety of others and the latter being more like a formula one driver who has the skill and dedication becoming of their profession. Only visit a hypnotherapist who is trained to the highest standards, a member of a governing body, and is fully insured. A therapist who has nothing to hide will gladly show you proof of the above.
Q. Can I get "stuck" in a trance?A. No, It's impossible to get stuck, if you were left to your own devices in trance you would either become aware that something was not right and bring yourself out of trance or simply drift into natural sleep and awaken some time later with no ill effects.
Q. Will I reveal all my secrets in trance?A. No, you won't reveal anything that you don't want to. You remain in control at all times.
